Project Rugby in schools and colleges
Over the school year our community development officers will be delivering rugby sessions to schools in the local community through Project Rugby.
Project Rugby is run by Premiership Rugby in collaboration with England Rugby and is designed to increase participation in the game by people from traditionally under-represented groups.
These groups are ethnically diverse communities, people from lower socio-economic backgrounds and disabled people.
The programme aims to transition students into grassroots clubs or their sustained involvement in the game.
Our community development officers have been attending local schools including Kingsmeadow, Peterlee, Newburn and South Tyneside College this term.
Community development officer Stephen Parsons, who has been delivering sessions to Kingsmeadow, said: “The girls have engaged well with the new skills, laws, complex nature of the game and the introduction of contact and tackling.
“It’s great to see them getting stuck in and enjoying tackling the opposition. They have picked up the key safety points and technical information required to ensure safe and effective tackles.”
