RICHARDS CONTENT WITH SOLID START TO CAMPAIGN

The Falcons supremo watched on as his troops claimed their third league victory of the season, a result which has propelled the club into eighth place, two points behind Harlequins who lie in sixth.

“We’ve got three wins out of six and I’m reasonably happy,” said Richards, who has guided the northeasterners to victories over Sale Sharks, Worcester Warriors and now London Irish this term.

He added: “It’s all about performance and making sure that we are on top form in every game that we play. Week in and week out the lads are going out onto the pitch, striving to improve their game.”

Despite Newcastle not showing enough penetration in attack this season, it is their steely defensive resistance that has made the difference.

Richards said: “We can grind out a win but we’re not scoring many tries. There again we’ve not been playing in fantastic conditions other than that at Leicester where we had a bit of a hiding to be honest. Today was an arm wrestle in appalling conditions.”

In previous seasons the result may have gone the other way, but the Falcons have real belief coupled with quality in their ranks now.

“For us we’re now in these tight contests which is nice,” said Richards.

“The result was important, but it’s your consistency throughout the year that’s the important thing,” he added.

The Falcons march on in the league with a trip to Saracens next weekend, before hosting Irish again the following week in the LV= Cup.
