Trailing 19-6 at the break, Newcastle Falcons’ character and desire rose to the surface as they snatched a point thanks to Noah Cato’s intercept try three minutes from time.
“I think at half-time we were looking at them getting a try-scoring bonus point so I suppose you have to be happy with getting a losing bonus point at the end,” said Falcons boss Richards.
“The boys sat down at half-time and got their heads together and challenged themselves to turn it around – and they did.
“We played with the wind in the first half and didn’t capitalise on it, conceded three tries and at half-time we were thinking ‘what the hell do we do?’, but to be fair to the players they challenged themselves to turn it around and they did.
“We just tend to drift in and out and we just haven’t put together 40 or 80 minutes of consistent rugby,” he added.
Eying Leicester Tigers next Sunday, who travel to the North East following yesterday’s 20-15 victory at London Irish, Richards said: “The key against Leicester is playing for the whole game like we did during the second half – and if we do that we stand a very good chance of winning.
“We just have to go out there and do it.”
