Richards rues Gloucester loss

Speaking after the Aviva Premiership encounter, the Newcastle Falcons boss said: “We’re unbelievably disappointed by how we performed tonight, especially after last weekend at Wasps.

“We showed inaccuracies in defence and an inability to score, we were making mistake after mistake and it cost us the game.

“With the amount of possession we had we should have scored more points than we did.”

Conceding a four-try bonus point on a night with few positives, Richards added: “We were two tries down at half-time and we had a chat about it. It came down to our understanding of how to play the game, and if you just run laterally all the time with no variety to your game you’ll never score a try.

“We had enough possession to win tonight, but it’s just understanding how to win it.

“Gloucester defended well and you have to take your hat off to them for that, but at the same time we lacked imagination in attack. We didn’t have enough understanding of how to play and accuracy in what we were doing, and we just weren’t at the races in those areas.

“In some ways they’re minor things, and they’re fixable. We conceded two tries from first phase, similarly to last week, and that should never happen.”
