Richards salutes Falcons’ resilience
A last-minute converted try from Nili Latu sealed the deal, his director of rugby saying: “There were a lot of errors from both sides which kept it as tight as it was, and we probably played at about 60%.
“To still win in those circumstances was quite nice because we know there’s a lot more to come, and we put out a hell of a back line tonight. If we can get a little bit more out of that back division there’ll be some good results coming our way.”
The Falcons boss added: “At half-time it was just an organisational chat more than anything, and even though it didn’t quite go according to plan it went reasonably well, and we always felt if we got close to their line we’d score. It took us a while to get down there, but we took our chance when it came.
“To be fair to the boys our defence was outstanding. Against better sides we might have been found out a little bit, but we dug in and came back. I loved that aspect of it.
“Both sides made mistakes on the night, it was one of those games but we found a way to win it. When you’re camped on their line you want guys like Nili there, and he brought it home. We had the advantage and we played it through, and it was a really well-taken try.
“The beauty is there is so much more to come, and we look forward to seeing that over the coming months.”
