Richards will take Edinburgh lessons into Premiership

The Falcons outscored their opponents two tries to one but lost a full-blooded contest thanks to three Edinburgh penalties, Richards saying afterwards: “I thought it was a really good work-out for the boys.

“Edinburgh asked questions of us where wanted to be asked questions, and there were a lot of good bits in there. Ultimately we lacked accuracy at times, and there were times when we had opportunities to cut them wide open but just didn’t take them.

“So there was that issue with a little bit of accuracy, and also some of the boys getting out of position at times. We were a little bit lacking in those areas, but there were also plenty of positives.”

Simon Hammersley and Santiago Socino dotted down for the Falcons with Jason Harries grounding Edinburgh’s only try, Richards saying: “They only scored one but had a couple of chances to add to that, and we prevented them from doing so.

“I thought we scrummaged well, and defensively as a whole I felt we were fine. In attack we were good when we got into our shape, but when we didn’t have that shape we struggled a bit. We showed we can cause them problems and it’s just fine-tuning that now.

“We’re disappointed to have lost tonight and obviously we’d have liked to have won, but at the same time it’s probably the kick up the arse we needed.

“If everything goes well you tend to look at things through rose-tinted glasses. I’m not happy we lost, don’t get me wrong, but it’s a reality check for the players which I think will do them good.”

Newcastle Falcons start their Aviva Premiership campaign at home to Worcester Warriors on Friday September 1. Tickets for the 7.45pm kick-off are available by [**clicking here**.][1]
