Shearer at Kingston Park to collect charity cheque
More than 6,000 supporters were in attendance for the 2-2 draw against a Manchester Select XI as many of the ‘Entertainers’ reunited 20 years on from their famous 5-0 victory over Manchester United.
Player-manager Shearer scored on the day before performing his trademark goal celebration, and the England great was back at the venue a month on from the game to collect the proceeds from Newcastle Falcons chairman Semore Kurdi.
The Toon great met Falcons players and helped with the marketing effort ahead of the club’s ‘Big Night Oot’ against Exeter Chiefs on Friday November 18, posing with the promotional Sinoti Sinoti cut-out.
Impressed by the venue and thankful to those who turned out for the Legends football game, Shearer said: “It was a great occasion to be part of, but more importantly a fantastic fundraising effort for the Alan Shearer Foundation.
“Kingston Park Stadium was a brilliant venue in which to stage the event, Newcastle Falcons were outstanding hosts and the money raised will help ensure the foundation’s good work can carry on.”
The Alan Shearer Foundation funds the Alan Shearer Centre in Newcastle, a highly specialist, respite, residential and social facility for people with complex disabilities and acute sensory impairments.
Shearer said: “We are incredibly grateful to everyone who came out and supported the game. The money raised is so important, and I even managed to sneak my goal onto Match of the Day!”
