Singha Premiership 7s eagerly anticipated by Laycock

With the Singha Premiership Rugby 7s only two weeks away, academy manager Mark Laycock is starting to cast an eye towards the competition and is looking forward to attempting to maintain the club’s proud run in the group stages.

The Falcons have contested four of the five editions of the sevens summer showcase and have won the initial qualifying round on each of those occasions and while there are enough variances to ensure that this can only be taken at face value, it does provide a motivation for the club.

“Defending the crown isn’t the way we look at it, because every year you have a new group of players and there are different challenges, but we’re really looking forward to it, a couple of weeks away from it now.”

“Everyone’s got the aspiration of going on and winning. We’ve been fortunate to have some good players play in the sevens in recent years and it is good when you have got top quality players in your squad.”

“Hopefully we’ll see some guys come through form this and hold the hands up for senior rugby going forward.”

With the sevens providing the first opportunity for a run out, Laycock says it plays an important part in the build up to the new season, as shown by the progression from sevens to the senior team by a number of last year’s squad.

“There were quite a few of the guys involved last year who went really well and are now pushing really hard for first team spots which is brilliant and is what it’s all about.
With the squad still to be determined, Laycock says fans can expect a similar set up to 2014 with a mix of youth and experience.

“We’ll see a couple of the younger academy lads, there’s the likes of Dan Marshall who was involved with the finals last year, and there’s the three lads who are going away to the Youth Commonwealth games who are all in the frame.”

“It’s going to be an exciting afternoon of rugby and it will be made even better if there is a good crowd there to cheer the boys on.”

Tickets for the Group D Singha Premiership Rugby 7s tournament are available to book now, with prices starting from £10 for adults and £5 for under 16s.
