Summer of Touch comes to successful conclusion.

Another successful Summer of Touch came to a conclusion on Wednesday, after an eight week season that began at started back in May at Kingston Park.

A well established part of the summer schedule, the 2015 competition has seen over 225 people participate with 18 made up from social circles, work colleagues rugby clubs, friends and families taking part in the games.

Over the first 6 weeks all the teams played each other once in a league format before the table split into 4 competitions, the Cup, Shield, Plate and Bowl.

The top 5 teams competed for the cup, the next 5 teams competed for the Shield, then the teams that 11th to 14th competed for the plate and finally the teams that finished 15 through to 18th competes for the bowl.

In an exciting new development, this season’s summer of touch saw all the games being played on the main pitch at Kingston Park with the Tap and Tackle bar open for refreshments allowing for teams to make their Wednesday evening a sociable one too.

The standard of rugby on show over the 8 weeks was very high, with retired professions showing their skill, mixed in with young, the old, the up and coming touch players and the increasing amount of women and girls taking up touch rugby.

The majority of the touch rugby was played in good spirits with music playing and fun shown by all.

The finals night was over 2 weeks allowing for longer games and teams to play each other twice in their respective competitions.

In the bowl the overall winners were Catch us if you can in the bright orange bibs, who overcame stiff competition from UNW barbarians, Billy no Mates and Accenture.

The Plate saw competition between Rycroft Glenton, Onyx Barbarians, Team OOSH and the Law Blacks, with Ryecroft Glenton only losing 1 of their 6 games during finals night.

A last minute try by the Medicals 3’s to gain a try bonus point was enough to see them win the Shields and take it out of the hands of Ward Hadaway with only 30 seconds left.

With The Ringers, Touch and go and No Woman no Try all trying to stop the Medicals 3’s from winning the Shield.

Touch us if you can were the new overall winners of the Summer of Touch taking the trophy away from the renamed The vest.

The deciding game was between Touch us if you can and Past their best both teams come from Novos RFC and in the deciding game Touch us if you can winning 5-2 to take the trophy away from their nearest rivals Past their best.

The cup was very competitive with Morpeth Has been with a touch of youth and TMPU all making it very tough for the winning team.

With 1 final touch rugby event for Summer 2015 sees the annual Beach festival at Longsands Beach, Tynemouth on the 1st August with places still available.
Not only is it the beach touch festival, it is the junior supporters club party making the day fun for all the family, with an appearance of the RWC trophy as part of the RWC trophy tour.
