Tait hails fiery Falcons opening
Try scorer Alex Tait says an aggressive opening laid the foundations for the club’s sixth home win in a row on Sunday in a 26-25 victory over Northampton Saints.
The Falcons crossed the visitors try line twice in the opening six minutes and while only Tait’s effort stood, it was an opening barrage that set the tone for the rest of the afternoon, with the winger believing it was not what the Saints expected.
Speaking to Falcons TV, Tait said, “We came out with a bang and I think we probably surprised Northampton by starting off really well and getting some points on the board. We always talk about coming out and starting with a bang, especially when we are at home just to make it as hard as possible for the opposition.”
Reflecting on the match at large, Tait added, “Fortunately Goodey chucked a pass on a plate that anyone could have scored that I am managed to get over and finish, so I was really pleased.”
“There was some to-ing and fro-ing and we seemed to take control towards the start of the second half. We had a little dip where we let them back into it and our intensity maybe dropped a little bit but fortunately we were able to hold on at the end to get the win.”
With a season high crowd of 7,218 filing into Kingston Park, it was another match where the team fed of the support of their home fans, with Tait joining his coaches in praising those in attendance.
When asked directly if that support provided a lift, Tait said, “I think so, and long may it continue. The noise throughout the whole stadium was massive today and it really drove us on to make those extra carries, make those tackles and really bust a gut to get that win. I was really happy with the crowd today and I hope they were happy today as well.”
Next up for the Falcons is a trip to Kingsholm this coming Saturday for a match that often provides an end to end encounter. After narrowly missing out in a 42-40 thriller last April,
Tait is calling on his team to keep doing what they are doing as they aim to continue their vein of form.
“We’ve just got to go down there and take the same belief that we can play these top teams and be competitive. Gloucester have been on a great run as well so we’re going to have to be really on our game, but we are going to be looking to take our belief, be as competitive as we can and try and take some points.”
