The Big One ’19 – Dean looks ahead

General sales are open for The Big One at St James’ Park, with director of rugby Dean Richards looking forward to another superb atmosphere when Newcastle Falcons take on Sale Sharks on Saturday 23rd March.

The 5.30pm Gallagher Premiership kick-off follows after a successful first staging of a game at the home of Newcastle United, which saw a club record home attendance of 30,174 see a 25-22 win over Northampton Saints.

And having been at the helm of Harlequins during the early years of their annual fixture at Twickenham, the Falcons’ boss says the occasion offered by the Big One offers one comparable to those games.

Speaking at the launch of the 2019 edition, Richards said: “Last year was a great day and a great occasion and speaks volumes for the reasons why we should do it”

“The atmosphere generated within was equally as good if not better [than Big Game’s] and it was probably one of the best rugby atmospheres I have seen for a long time.”

This year’s Big One once again falls on football’s international weekend, meaning Newcastle United and Middlesbrough are both not playing, while Sunderland are due to be away from home.

The 5.30pm kick-off time gives local club players and officials time to get into the city following their own matches, and enough time to enjoy the restaurants and nightlife post-match.

And with the final whistle set to sound at around 7.20pm, the family-friendly timing ensures those with little ones are able to bring them along to one of the year’s must-see sporting events.
