Newcastle Falcons lock Calum Green looking forward to the challenge posed by Exeter Chiefs in Sunday’s Aviva Premiership Rugby encounter at Kingston Park Stadium.

After 12 rounds of the season, Green has claimed 59 lineout wins, bettered only by Exeter’s Jonny Hill on 60 and three ahead of the next challenger, the Chiefs’ Don Armand, with Green relishing the personal challenge ahead.

Speaking to FalconsTV, he said: “It [the challenge] is going to be a good one. Lineout time is massively important because it’s a good chance to give your team a platform to attack from so both in attack and defence is going to be big.

“If we can get up and spoil some of their ball it will be massive for our defence, in attack we want to win clean ball and give the backs good ball to play off, so I think it’s going to be pretty competitive.”

Looking at the wider permutations as the fifth-placed Falcons take on the league leaders, Green says the match will provide a good barometer of where the club finds itself as it heads into a month of cup action that can earn knock-out berths in both Europe and the Anglo-Welsh competitions.

“It’s going to be a big challenge for us, I think we’ve improved a lot over the last 18 months but they are and have been the best team in the country, so they are going to be a big challenge and a good chance to see where we are at.”
