Falcons and Scotland great Doddie Weir voiced his excitement for ‘The Big One’ on March 24 this week, as the former second row attended the launch of the club’s special one-off shirt for their Aviva Premiership clash against Northampton Saints.

Taking place at the St James’ Park home of Newcastle United the game is shaping up to be the showpiece finale of a huge day of rugby in the North East, which the club is also using to support Weir in his mission to improve levels of research into MND.

Falcons fans have been whole-heartedly joining in with those efforts with almost all of the replicas of the one-off shirt, which all profits are being donated to the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation now sold.

Alongside the shirt, over 800 tickets have been sold that generate a donation to the foundation, with Weir looking forward to joining the Falcons family for the club’s big day in the city centre.

Speaking to Falcons TV at the shirt launch, Weir said; “I’ve been involved with the Falcons for a number of years and I’m very excited, I was here for a couple of games at the World Cup and what a great atmosphere was here at St James Park, so hopefully we can emulate that in some way.

“I think what is exciting a lot of Falcons players and supporters is, they maybe never thought this could happen so I’m delighted that St James’ Park and the Falcons have gotten together and put this game on.”
