Walder calls on fans to turn out for Doddie
A Falcons XV will take on the Melrose-based Southern Knights for the Doddie’s Club Trophy, with two of the Scotland great’s former clubs meeting in a 3pm kick-off at Kingston Park.
Proceeds from the game will go to My Name’5 Doddie, the foundation set up to raise funds and awareness into Motor Neurone Disease, the currently-incurable condition with which Doddie has been diagnosed.
Walder, a former team-mate of the Scot, said: “Normally the only thing I want from a game is a Newcastle win, and I’m not any different on this occasion apart from the fact of also wanting to raise a load of money for Doddie’s foundation as well as keeping our unbeaten run going.
“He’s a fighter, and the awareness he’s managed to bring to MND is incredible. The way the rugby community has rallied around him is a marker of how highly they regard him, and he has enormous respect across the board.
“I’m sure Melrose will be coming down here with the mind-set of wanting to turn us over, and with it being so close to Christmas hopefully we’ll get a decent crowd with people really wanting to enjoy some live sport in that great holiday atmosphere.”
