WATCH: Hammersley previews Friday’s semi-final
Simon Hammersley spoke to Falcons TV in the build-up to tonight’s European Rugby Challenge Cup semi-final against Gloucester, where the fullback spoke of the excitement within the squad as they prepare for the last four tie.
The club’s first appearance in this stage of the competition since facing London Irish at Kingston Park Stadium back in April 2006, it’s a game that Hammersley is hopeful that the Falcons can take momentum into from the league campaign.
He said: “Everyone is very excited, we’ve had a few good games in the Premiership and built some momentum, so everyone is excited going into some knock out rugby.
“It would have been nice to have the crowd going again like they were against Sale but going down to Gloucester, it is maybe slightly easier to go and be the away team with slightly less pressure on you.”
Having booked their place with a dogged performance against Brive at the end of March, the 25-year-old says more of the same would do quite nicely in the West Country of Friday as the Falcons aim to make it all the way to the Bilbao showcase in May.
“I think like we’ve been talking about all week it’s just who has the most points after 80 minutes, it doesn’t really matter about performance, it would obviously be nice to play some pretty nice flowing rugby, but it just comes down to who’s got the most points.”
