Watson Extends Lead As Top European Scorer

Going into yesterday’s game as the leading try scorer in this season’s European Rugby Challenge Cup competition, Falcons Winger Marcus Watson extended his lead even further with a brace of scores against Connacht.

Speaking after a 29-5 victory that saw the Falcons keep their hopes of qualifying for the knock-out stages of the competition as pool winners, Watson said:

“It was good to get a win and hopefully build some momentum going back into the Premiership next weekend.

“Our second half performance was a good one and we’ll look to build on it heading into the next round of this competition too.”

Watson, who touched down four times in the Falcons’ first home game of the competition against former Russian champions Enisei-STM, has now scored a total of six tries in the first four rounds of the competition.

The first of five Falcons tries in total was a particularly special effort from Watson, the Winger making his way down the field and pushing through the opposition’s defence to touch down in front of the North Stand.

“I was quite lucky to score,” explained the former London Irish Academy player, “I probably should’ve passed it to be honest and if I hadn’t I think I would’ve got quite a bit of stick so I was just pleased to get over the line!”

Having signed from Newcastle Falcons earlier in the year after three years with England Sevens, Watson believes he still has much to learn in the 15s form of the game.

“I’ve enjoyed it since I arrived here but I think I’ve learned a bit more since then, and still have plenty to learn.

“For me at the start it was about getting comfortable in my role and I definitely feel that at the moment so I’m enjoying it.”
