Watson hails standard of Singha Sevens
England 7s star and Newcastle Falcons new boy Marcus Watson says the Singha Premiership Rugby 7s will provide an exciting start to the new season when the summer road show decamps at Kingston Park this Saturday.
Watson, who has experience of the tournament from his time at Saracens on top of his four years representing England on the Sevens World Series tour was full of praise for the competition and its role within the calendar.
“The sevens is a good tournament, I remember playing in it with Saracens when we got to the second round, it’s a good standard with a good mixture of some young boys and some older heads who have played quite a bit of sevens.”
“It’s a good development tool, in terms of developing your individual skills I think it puts pressure on those, especially in an environment where you miss one tackle and a lot of the time it’s a try.”
“It helps with fitness massively in terms of making yourself a better rugby player, sevens is a great tool for that.”
Having made the switch back to the fifteen man game this summer with his move to the North East, Watson is currently working on the transition back into the full code, setting himself achievable targets as his immediate goals.
“I think my first target was to come and get used to the environment, the players and the type of rugby that is played here, which has gone well.
“Now it’s about getting as much game time as possible and getting used to playing fifteens again after a couple of years out which might take a little bit of time.”
Coming into a squad with a familiar face in the shape of former Saracens team mate Adam Powell, Watson is settling in well and enjoying the experience of life as a Falcon so far.
“They are a good bunch of boys here, they have been really welcoming. Newcastle is a great place, I’ve enjoyed my time so far and I’m looking forward to the next couple of years here.”
“It’s about getting the balance right about working hard and enjoying yourself a little bit. It seems like what a lot of the boys do, it’s a team that works hard.”
