Welch outlines Falcons’ positive philosophy for Sunday

The Falcons are four points ahead of the Exiles at the foot of the table going into the 3pm kick-off, Welch insisting that clear heads and an ambitious playing style will stand his team in good stead.

The skipper said: “I think it will come down to the team which is willing to play for the win rather than being afraid to lose.

“We’ve got to go out there and be accurate and disciplined because it’s going to be a tight game, and it will probably go down to the wire. We’ve got to make sure we’re on the right side of that.

“You can’t shut up shop and be negative or conservative because they’re a good team. They’ll take their opportunities and pile pressure on you. You’ve got to have the opposite mind-set and go after them in attack and defence. We’ve got to be accurate and do our job well, and hopefully that will get us over the line.”

A big crowd is expected on the back of strong early sales, Welch saying: “It’s an advantage, but it’s a massive game for Irish as well. They’ll be coming up chomping at the bit so we’ve got to go out there and attack them, and be brave at the same time.

“They’ve got a good set-piece, driving-wise and scrum-wise but they can play as well. I’ve watched their last few games and they’re not shy about chucking the ball around and playing with the ball in hand. They like the high-tempo game as well. It’s just about defensively making sure we don’t give them any cheap field position which they can build from.”
