Welch Pays Tribute to Clinical Saracens
Speaking after Sunday’s 3-38 defeat by Aviva Premiership leaders Saracens, Newcastle Falcons captain Will Welch paid tribute to the reigning champions and said his side would take a lot away from the game.
“Saracens are a good side; they stick to what they do well and they come away with points.”
“For 55 minutes we were there or thereabouts with them, but when errors start creeping into your game against a side like that they will punish you.”
Heading in for half time at 3-13 behind, the Falcons were still very much in contention against a strong Saracens side, but as Mark McCall’s side established a 3-23 lead, Welch’s Falcons found themselves chasing the game.
“We started chasing a bit and made basic errors, especially in our own half and they came away with points. That’s why they’re the league leaders and make it to the final time and time again. But we’ll learn our lessons and look ahead.”
However, despite the final result, Welch believes there are positives to take forward from the game.
“The score line doesn’t reflect it but I thought there was some good stuff in there; the pack fronted up pretty well in line outs and maul-wise too.
“We’re our own worst enemy at times with basic errors but if we cut those out of our game we’ll kick on against teams like Saracens. Sometimes it’s easier said than done but if we concentrate on our basics and on doing them well then hopefully we’ll get the results.”
Newcastle Falcons’ attentions now turn to the European Rugby Challenge Cup, with the team travelling to Ireland to face Connacht this Friday, before welcoming the Pro 12 side back to Kingston Park Stadium the following week on Sunday 20th December.
