WILL WELCH CONFIRMED AS CAPTAIN FOR 2014-15 SEASON

Now in his third year as captain Welch, 24, is positive about the season ahead. “It’s really pleasing to be made captain again, and much easier because there’s a great bunch of boys here who are working really hard, with good leaders behind them.

“This will be my third season as captain and the way we’re going with the new signings we’ve brought in and the number of younger guys developing in the squad things look positive. We have big ambitions and are growing in confidence too so it’s an exciting place to be.”

A product of the Falcons Academy, former RGS pupil Welch is in positive spirits about the season ahead. He said: “There’s always a good buzz about the place at the start of a season but this year even more so. We stayed in the Premiership last season, which is what we wanted, and with the squad that we’re building and the coaching team that we have it’s now just about having the confidence to kick on.”

Speaking of the captaincy announcement, director of rugby Dean Richards said: “I’m delighted to announce Will as club captain for a third consecutive season.

“It’s important to have continuity in the squad but I thought he did a great job in what was always going to be a difficult season, and really shone through. Will is a talented young player who has come up through the Academy at the club and I’m thrilled that he is continuing in the role as captain, a role which I’m sure can only be of benefit to his continued development as well as to the development of the club.”
