Willis Keen To Take Opportunities
Newcastle Falcons’ 27-7 victory over the IRB’s 13th ranked national side last Friday was an evening to remember for many, none more so than Craig Willis.
After two full seasons with the Falcons’ Senior Academy, the 20 year old enjoyed his inaugural first team start in the game against Georgia.
Speaking of his experience Willis, 20, said: “It was really good for me personally, a little bit nerve-wracking at first – especially playing in a different position – but it was good to be involved and put in a half decent performance.”
Willis began the game at Full Back before moving into the number 10 position midway through the game after Tom Catterick left the field injured.
And despite being a Fly Half by trade, the mid-game move into such an integral position must have been daunting for the Stockton-born youngster.
“In the game you don’t get much chance to think about it. Through pre-season I’ve been getting a lot of time in at 10 so I was quite comfortable stepping up.
“If I’d had more time to think about it in the game I think the nerves might’ve kicked in but it was alright stepping up when you’re already on the pitch and it was good to get that opportunity.”
This Sunday the Falcons are in action again as they take on Sale Sharks at Kingston Park Stadium in the opening round of the Kings of the North competition and Willis is hopeful of being involved in the game and furthermore heading into the season.
“When I came back from injury last season I started to step up and put myself forward in positions where I’d maybe be looked at a bit more so I feel as though I’m doing pretty well, and hopefully if and when I get my chance I can take it.”
Tickets for Sunday’s game against Sale Sharks are on sale now, starting from £17 for adults and £7.50 for juniors, and can be purchased [online][1], in person from the Kingston Park Stadium Box Office or by calling the Falcons’ 24 hour Ticket Hotline on 0871 226 6060.
