When William Oakley first attended one of our camps in 2020, his anxiety almost cut the experience short. But with gentle encouragement from his mum Sydnie and the camp coaches, William discovered a confidence he didn’t know he had. Four years later, he continues to thrive at Falcons camps.

“William is autistic and has ADHD,” explains Sydnie. “New environments and people can be really daunting for him. The transformation we’ve seen as a family has been amazing. He’s now so confident, even approaching businesses to ask for raffle prizes. The club feels like home to him.”

Now, William is giving back to the two organisations that mean the most to him: Newcastle Rugby Foundation and Peterlee and Horden Rugby Club. True to form, he’s taken on the ambitious challenge of completing 10 challenges over 10 months.

From a 24-hour silence (with only a few grunts!) to scaling Roseberry Topping, hosting a fundraising party, and tackling the muddy Clarty Bairns course, William has embraced every task with adventure and determination. “Everyone was just so nice to me,” William shares. “They made me feel welcome and so much happier. I don’t like school too much and struggle at times, but I know I fit in at rugby. My brother and little sister play too, and they love it. That’s why I want to do this.”

With an initial fundraising target of £2,000, William has already raised over £3,000 and is aiming for £6,000 by May. “I’ve got some great things planned for 2025,” he says, “including a colour run, a Six Nations Fantasy Rugby competition, a fun day and more bake sales. I really want to smash my target!”
