Homegrown second-rower Adam Scott has signed up for another two seasons with Newcastle Falcons.

The 22-year-old joined the senior academy last summer after graduating from his sports science degree at Newcastle University, with the Walbottle native making his first-team debut in December’s trip to Johannesburg.

Delighted to have extended his stay with the Falcons, the Denton-Burn-born forward said: “I’ve really enjoyed my first year as a full-time professional.

“It’s a very different environment from university and playing part-time, and I’ve loved that. It’s much more full-on, as you’d expect, and I really enjoy that aspect of it.”

The former Gosforth Academy pupil was part of the Falcons’ associate academy programme during his time at university, and in the longer term is hoping to push his case for Premiership selection.

“It’s been great training with the Falcons every day, and to make my first-team debut out in South Africa against the Lions was also really special,” said Scott.

“I’m really happy to have re-signed for another two years, and I just want to keep working hard so that eventually I’ll be able to stake my claim to play in the Premiership. I have another two years to work towards that goal, and it’s just a case of looking to learn and improve all the time that I’m here.”

Newcastle Falcons’ head of academy, James Ponton, said: “It’s great news that we’ve extended Adam’s contract by another couple of seasons.

“He’s an up-and-coming young player with incredible athletic ability, but through injury he has had very limited game time this season. We’re really excited about his future, and during these two development years he has a great chance to move up into a more senior role within the squad.

“He’s in his first year as a full-time pro after graduating from Newcastle University, he’s been transitioning into the senior academy and I’m looking forward to seeing him progress.

“He’s really powerful and athletic so he’ll be excellent around the line-out, and he’s an intelligent lad who will develop his line-out calling.”

Elaborating on Scott’s route into professional rugby, Ponton added: “He’s a great advert for the various academy pathways that we have here at the club because he joined our ACE programme at Gosforth Academy, but then opted to go to university rather than joining us full-time.

“He kept his link with the Falcons as part of our associate academy during his studies and then came on full-time with us after graduating, and it’s just an illustration that there’s more than one route into a career in professional rugby.

“It’s a different story to someone coming straight in from school, but I think it just tells people that the door is never closed and we’ve got a wide net when it comes to recruiting talented players from the area.”
