Burrows: Players remaining grounded after Euro win
The Falcons’ flying start to the season also sees them in the Aviva Premiership’s top four ahead of Sunday’s visit of Leicester Tigers, Burrows delighted to have played a big part in their French triumph.
“It was good to be out there,” said the former Yorkshire Carnegie captain, who scored one of three Newcastle tries at Stade Chaban-Delmas.
“It has just been a case of biding my time, I’ve had the last two games and thoroughly enjoyed them, and we’ve achieved two good wins on the back of the performances that the boys have put in.
“It’s a happy camp at the moment but the good thing is we’re not getting carried away with ourselves. We’ll enjoy the win but it’s straight back into business on Monday morning because we know how big this Leicester game is going to be.”
Pleased by the manner in which he and his forward cohorts handled their Bordeaux examination, Burrows said: “We had spoken before the game about the fact we were coming over to France and facing a big, physical pack.
“We challenged ourselves in that area and said that’s where the game will be decided, because it was always going to be an arm-wrestle. Credit to the boys, because each and every one of us stepped up.
“We’d done our analysis and we knew exactly what kind of game we were in for. That doesn’t make it easy, but it means we’re prepared and ready, and it’s great to come over to France and get a win.
“It wasn’t perfect by any means, don’t get me wrong, and there are a lot of areas we need to tidy up. But we’re doing that work from a winning position and that’s always a good feeling.”
Crediting his team’s tactical kicking in a strong second-half showing, he added: “The way we controlled the half through our kicking game was really noticeable, with guys like Micky Young, Toby Flood and Josh Matavesi sticking them down in the corner.
“As a forward that’s what you want to see when you pull your head out from a scrum, a maul or a ruck, and we made them play out of their own 22. Just that little bit of territorial thinking allowed us to get ourselves on the front foot, and to win that part of the battle.”
