COACH THE COACHES SESSION A SUCCESS

Tuesday 25 February 2014 Written by: Adam

More than 50 coaches from the North East and Cumbria were in attendance as Falcons director of rugby Richards, head coach Peter Russell, forwards coach John Wells, defence coach Graham Steadman, scrum coach Micky Ward and video analyst Martin Hastie previewed the game with the region’s coaches. Former Falcon Tane Tu’ipulotu who retired from professional rugby earlier this season, and community coach Gavin Beasley were heavily involved in the process as Richards and Co talked the coaches through game strategy, defensive play, the logistics of a week leading up to a game and video analysis. Not only that, there was post-match analysis after Newcastle had picked up a losing bonus-point thanks to Noah Cato’s intercept try three minutes from time.

Former England coach now Falcons coach Wells said: “All of the Falcons coaches thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to have an informal chat with the region’s coaches.

“I personally was delighted with the amount of interaction that occurred, and I hope that all of the coaches took something away from the experience.”

Darren Smith of Hartlepool Boys Brigade Old Boys, who was in attendance, said: “It was a most insightful and interesting day. It was excellent to hear professional coaches discussing the game and how they approach it.

“The amount of planning and analysis that goes into each match is incredible. I took away with me that a lot of the general principles of play are similar to that of the low level that I coach at, but the execution and meticulous planning is light years ahead of our grassroots set-up. It was very interesting and I would welcome any similar courses.”

Rugby development officer of TyneMet College, Jack Lambert said: “I thought that the match day event was superb. I learnt a lot and the detailed information, as well as the way it was delivered, was fantastic and gave a great insight into the professional game.”
