CPD’S HEAD TO CUMBRIA

Tuesday 16 April 2013 Written by: Adam

Dean Richards and John Wells headed to Penrith RFC and academy manager Mark Laycock headed to Kendal RFC.

Coaches from across Cumbria descended on Penrith to watch a session run by Wells on the breakdown. Using players from the Cumbria Under-18s squad, the former England coach took the coaches through current techniques, drills and other skills which are used in and around the breakdown.

The following week saw Laycock make his way to Kendal RFC to deliver a coach the coaches session on sevens rugby. Mark spoke to the group indoors showing slides and clips from sevens competitions, specifically the JP Morgan 7s which the Falcons won. Afterwards the coaches headed outside onto the pitch where the academy chief showed the coaches warm up drills, skills and techniques which can be used in sevens rugby.

These coach the coaches session were part of a series of three which have been run in Cumbria. The first session was led by Falcons director of rugby Dean Richards and head coach Peter Russell on game play followed by the final two sessions which looked at the breakdown and sevens play. More than 85 coaches from across Cumbria attended the CPD sessions and we hope that they found them useful for the future.
