Richards’ men were defeated 27-13 despite having led 13-6 at half-time, the Falcons boss saying: “Fair dues to Worcester, I thought they were outstanding on the day.

“We had a lot of inaccuracies when we had the ball in our hands which meant we were defending a lot of the time, and when you’re defending for so long in a game against quality players like Jackson Willison, Nick Schonert, Ben Te’o, Dave Denton and the like, it’s going to tell.

“Ultimately that’s what happened, and had we had that accuracy with ball in hand then it might have been another story. I thought Worcester thoroughly deserved their win, and they’re a good side with good players. I don’t think their league position reflects the ability within their group, but in terms of today they were well worth their win.”

Making a slow start before leading at the interval, the Falcons conceded three second-half tries without response.

Richards said: “We didn’t have a look-in for the first 20 minutes, again through our own inaccuracies when we had the ball, and we’ve spoken about it in the changing room.

“We just need to do these repeated actions time and again, but it hasn’t been there the last few weeks. It’s certainly something we need to work on.

“Worcester aren’t an easy side to play against, they make life difficult for you and the frustrating thing from their side is that they just haven’t turned up for certain games. When they do turn up, like today, they’re a real force to be reckoned with.”

The Falcons’ quest for a Premiership semi-final spot sees them hosting in-form Sale Sharks at Kingston Park Stadium on Friday, Richards saying: “The Sale game was always going to be massive, and it certainly is now.

“Every single league game is vital in terms of whether we finish in the top four, top six or even seventh, and there’s absolutely everything to play for.”
