Deano disappointed after Saracens loss

The former England and Lions No 8 said following the Kingston Park clash: “We are disappointed, really, but it’s probably a measure of where we are at this moment in time.

“We are a side which is evolving, we are getting there, but for us today is disappointing because we, a little bit like last week at Exeter, were playing against a side who are accurate in everything they do.

“We went off-script a little bit, we didn’t do what we said we were going to do and when you’re up against a side as accurate as Saracens time and time again, it comes back to haunt you.”

Richards added: “On paper they had a fantastic side out, like us they were missing a couple of people so it evened itself out in that sense, but they went about their job well. We knew what they were going to do and they delivered it in the way we thought they would, with a great degree of accuracy.”

Scoring tries through Dominic Waldouck, Vereniki Goneva and David Wilson, he said: “We missed three try-scoring opportunities. Had we taken those it might have been a different thing altogether, but you’ve got to take them and we didn’t. That was probably the story of the day, really, and Saracens were far more clinical than we were.

“They got away with absolute murder in the line-out drives, coming round offside all the time, and the referee didn’t seem to pick that up. But you have to react to that and change things accordingly, which we weren’t able to do.

“When we started to stick to script and play around the one-out runner they were sending up, it caught them out and we made ground all over the place. But it was too little too late, given the scoreline by that stage.”

Having to wait three weeks before their next outing, the Falcons boss said: “I am pretty upset about today, and I know the players are as well.

“Their bodies are battered and it has been a hard slog these last few months, and their bodies deserve a break. But we’re frustrated and we want to make amends. We’ll have to wait a few weeks to have that opportunity now.”
