The South Shields native, who turned 29 earlier this month, has signed until the end of the current season from Greene King IPA Championship club Yorkshire Carnegie.

Fitzpatrick made 38 Aviva Premiership appearances for the Falcons and helped the club to the Championship title, playing a further 16 times in the European Challenge Cup as well as appearing in the 2011 LV= Cup final.

Newcastle Thunder head coach Mick Mantelli said: “Fitzy has been training with us for a couple of weeks now and has been going well in those sessions. He’s a big and powerful lad and it will be good to see him bring what he was known for in union to our team.

“We’ve got six big games coming up with the chance of a trophy at the end if we play to our potential, and Fitzy can have a big role to play in that.”

Newcastle Thunder are next in action on Sunday July 24 when they host Gloucestershire All Golds at Kingston Park Stadium (3pm), with further home games coming on Sunday August 7 against North Wales Crusaders (3pm) and Saturday September 3 against Coventry Bears (5pm).
