Falcons continue to fly in Rugby World Cup
The second weekend of Rugby World Cup 2015 again saw a host of Falcons out on the pitch, putting in meaningful contributions for their respective nations.
With Juan Pablo Socino not included in the match day squad to face Georgia at Kingsholm and with Tonga not playing until Tuesday, the club’s first involvement came in Saturday’s lunchtime kick off, Italy v Canada.
Josh Furno and Giamba Venditti were once again starters for the Azzuri and played the full eighty minutes, as the Italians put an end to a four match losing streak and got their campaign to qualify from pool D back under way.
Immediatley after at Villa Park, Alesana Tuilagi was part of a Samoan side that felt the full force of a South African backlash, as the Springboks avenged their shock 32-34 loss to Japan in the opening weekend, with a comprehensive 46-6 win.
In Sunday’s second game, Falcons props Jon Welsh and Eric Fry squared off against each other lining up for Scotland and USA.
Welsh and Fry battled for forty minutes during the match won 39-16 by Scotland with the American loose head in particular drawing the attention and earning praise from the ITV Sport commentary team.
The results from the Pool B games ensure that as the teams travel to the North East for games at St James’ Park, that the region will see huge moments as Samoa, Scotland and South Africa push for the two quarter final berths.
The next Falcons involvement in the tournament will come on Tuesday evening, when Sonatane Takulua’s Tonga take on Namibia at Sandy Park in Exeter.
