Falcons Foundation Summer term round up
As the summer term heads towards completion, the Falcons Community Foundation is still working throughout the region with their latest group of programmes.
With 2015 being a rugby-centric year and the Newcastle Falcons hosting the Fan-zone in Newcastle, these summer programmes focus on key events in the rugby calendar.
Discover Rugby, which is kindly supported by the Northumberland Rugby Union Trust, gives children from five schools across Newcastle the chance to partake in two hours per week of rugby and culture education with the Falcons Community Foundation coaches.
Using countries who will be participating in Rugby World Cup matches in Newcastle, the children learn about the culture, heritage and geography of New Zealand, Samoa and Scotland as well as enjoying an hour of tag rugby coaching per class. St Bedes, St Johns, Wingrove Primary, English Martyrs and Sacred Heart have all been enjoying this programme in Newcastle City.
For a slightly different take on the rugby world, Supporter to Reporter provides insight into a journalist’s view on professional sport made possible by the Equality and Human Rights Commission. Taking children through basics of literacy as well as research, argument, bias and report writing, this programme has been well received by teachers throughout Newcastle.
Participants will also get a chance to come and report live on a Newcastle Thunder match vs Hemel Stags. St Pauls CE, Moorside, Westgate Hill, Hawthorn and Our Lady St Anne’s have relished the opportunity to be involved over the past five weeks and we are excited to see what the teams bring to the festival next week!
Alongside our local programmes, the national focus from Premiership Rugby falls to On the Front Foot and Urban Rugby in the summer term. Whilst Keith Robinson wraps up our Aviva Tackling Numbers delivery in Cumbria- a programme which allows children numeracy and tag rugby education- Gavin Beasley and the rest of the Northumberland based coaches focus on the On the Front Foot primary delivery to Hotspur, West Walker and Byker.
Urban Rugby outreach sessions are happening now at Dickinson Dees Park, TyneMet College and Gateshead College. A ground-breaking new initiative supported by Restart Rugby and BT Supporter’s Club, the programme will see young people aged 14-16 from disadvantaged communities given the opportunity to participate in regular sporting activity and personal development workshops that use rugby as inspiration.
As well as the school programmes, Touch Rugby is going down a storm for 2015 on the main pitch of Kingston Park on Wednesday evenings and we have the Falcons Beach Party coming up on August 1st!
