The victory was England’s first over France at this level in more than a decade, Northumbria University player Elliott (pictured) joined by Falcons Charlie Wilson (Durham) and George Wacokecoke (Northumbria), who both started in the centres.

The team was coached by former Falcons prop Darren Fearn (Northumbria) and also contained a host of North-East-based players, a number of whom have featured for the Falcons in Premiership Rugby Shield action this season.

The English and French students will do it all again in the return leg on Friday in Barbezieux St Hilaire.

Meanwhile, Falcons prop Phil Brantingham was part of the England Under-18s squad which defeated Wales Under-18s 38-20 in Gloucestershire on Sunday.

Brantingham was on the bench for the opening round of the Six Nations Festival at Hartpury, England’s schedule seeing them up against Ireland on Wednesday (1.40pm) and France on Sunday (1.40pm), both games being live in the UK on FreeSports TV.
