Newcastle Falcons will head into this weekend’s Kings of the North fixture against Leicester Tigers looking to close down leaders Sale Sharks, after Steve Diamonds side made it 10 points from a possible ten with a 38-5 win last weekend.

With a combination of international call ups and injuries ensuring the Falcons fielded an inexperienced side against the Sharks in round one, Director of Rugby Dean Richards will be looking forward to welcoming back a collection of first team regulars ahead of the trip to Welford Road.

Speaking after his side’s 22-36 reverse to the Sharks, Richards said, “We had 20-odd people unavailable due to injuries and international call-ups, so there were a lot of young boys given their chance. They acquitted themselves well, although obviously there were some disappointing aspects which we will look at.”

“When you have guys coming in very late in the day it is difficult to get them into the system we are aiming to play. Sale only had three guys unavailable and we had more than 20 away. The important thing is we have a good crop of youngsters here, and they are showing up well.”

“Lads like Brett Connon and Craig Willis stood up. The back-row acquitted themselves well with Joe Nayacavou and Dave Fairbrother on trial, and in the second-row Sean Robinson and Calum Green played really well.”

The match at Leicester kicks off at 15:00 with the team set to be announced
