Falcons To Make Supporters of Local School Reporters
Having already delivered a wide array of rugby education programmes in schools across the North East, the Falcons Community Foundation are preparing to deliver a new programme aiming to encourage literacy through rugby.
With this programme taking place in the run up to rugby’s biggest event, the Rugby World Cup, landing in Newcastle, it is the perfect time to use the sport as a springboard for other learning and development.
The Supporter to Reporter programme will work with year five and six children in Newcastle city centre schools to provide education sessions on journalism and report writing alongside a programme of tag rugby sessions, all led by Newcastle Falcons staff and coaches.
The programme will culminate in a match day festival at Kingston Park stadium, with two pupils from each school also nominated to write a report on their team’s performance at the festival.
The overall winners will then shadow the club’s media staff for a match day at Kingston Park, interviewing players before seeing their match report in print in the club’s match day programme.
Supporter to Reporter will then continue later in the review with refresher sessions immediately before the event and all participants from around the city invited to take part in a junior rugby tournament at the Newcastle city centre Rugby World Cup fan zone, run by Newcastle Falcons in association with Ramside Events.
Run by the Falcons Community Foundation, Supporter to Reporter links into the Rugby World Cup 2015 and particularly to Newcastle’s status as a Rugby World Cup host city.
