Goneva feeding off home support on Sunday
The 3pm Kingston Park kick-off is almost certain to be the club’s first sell-out since May 2008, with only a few hundred tickets remaining on sale.
Goneva, the free-scoring Fijian wing who won the Aviva Premiership title with Leicester, said: “I think it’s great that the supporters from this region are getting so involved in their rugby and showing us so much love.
“They’re always a great crowd up here but of course it’s nice to see the ground full, and it really gives the boys a lift. If we do sell out the ground it would be really good for the club, and the atmosphere here is great to begin with.”
Having enjoyed a mid-season freshener after not being registered for the club’s European Challenge Cup squad, the experienced winger was happy to watch from the sidelines as his team-mates recorded victories over Dragons and Bordeaux-Begles to go top of Pool One.
Goneva said: “The sun’s out, so I’m happy, and even though I’ve not been playing it’s great to see the boys have gone so well in Europe over the past two weeks.”
Well aware of the threat posed by a Leicester side who themselves enjoyed a big win in Europe last weekend, he added: “As a team, Leicester are always one where I look for their score and see how they’re doing, but I’m a Newcastle player now and my focus is only on the Falcons.
“Both teams have really got going this season and I think it’s going to be an exciting game for the supporters.
“Leicester were on fire last weekend against Castres but we’ve been going well ourselves, Europe has been good for us and we want to extend our record here at Kingston Park Stadium.
“The team here is the main thing at Newcastle, all the boys work hard for each other and that does count for a lot. We know Leicester will bring a threat but if we all work together we believe we can match them.”
