The former England and British Lion star coached more than 25 players, who took part in a number of rugby based games with the focus on the fun side of the game. He also spoke to the youngsters about his journey into rugby, starting in a broken home in Leeds through alcohol abuse, to a World Cup winners medal and tea with the Queen!

> “I think rugby can help these young people learn more about courage,
> teamwork, fair play and respect. Values and attributes that playing
> rugby at any level helped me to understand. I hope they go away today
> with fond memories of the coaching today and a better understanding of
> the power of sport”

Prince’s Trust Fairbridge Programme is an individually tailored personal development programme combining one-to-one support and group activities for young people aged 13-25 who are looking for a new direction in life. It runs in both Newcastle and Middlesbrough and the programme lasts as long as it takes for the individual to achieve a positive outcome.

Newcastle Falcons Hitz project officer, Sam Shaw-Kew attended the session to lend a hand with the coaching and offer young people the chance to continue with their rugby journey by providing free tickets to watch the Falcons play Bristol in the last match of the regular season plus a follow up session at Kingston Park and offer the opportunity to join the Newcastle Falcons Hitz Programme.

The Newcastle Falcons Hitz Programme, works with young people who are not in education, employment or training (NEET) and aims to use Rugby Union, (specifically the core values of teamwork, respect, discipline, enjoyment and sportsmanship) to reengage them into education and create opportunities for future employment.
