It’s been said by many that Newcastle Falcons are a team to watch over the coming seasons, not only because of the entertaining brand of rugby that’s being played at Kingston Park Stadium, but because of the talented crop of players currently developing through the Falcons’ Academy.
Always a proud breeding ground for rugby talent in the North East, the Falcons Academy is once again bearing fruit under the stewardship of Manager Mark Laycock and Head Coach James Ponton.
Last season alone saw five Academy players make their Aviva Premiership debuts in the form of Simon Hammersley, Tom Penny, Sean Robinson, Will Witty and Academy Player of the Season Chris Harris.
The Carlisle-born back scored five tries in his first four league appearances this season and has been hotly tipped as one to watch in the season to come when both Harris and Hammersley will ply their trade in the club’s senior side having officially graduated from the Academy.
Having made a big impact for England Under 20s so far this summer Lock Witty will be hopeful of making more first team appearances during the season ahead as will Zach Kibirige, who returned from injury on the final day of last season to make his second Premiership appearance for the club.
Already many of the Falcons’ senior squad is comprised of young local players who have made their way through the Academy system, such as captain Will Welch, recent England debutant Mark Wilson and Fly Half Tom Catterick.
With a number of other promising young players already working to make the step up to senior rugby and the Academy having recruited well for the season ahead, the trend of strong young players coming through the club’s ranks looks set to continue long into the future.
