Mayhew Eager For Second Chance Against Connacht
Speaking after his side’s 25-10 defeat in Galway on Friday night, Richard Mayhew said Newcastle Falcons are already looking ahead to the return fixture one week from today.
The two-week European Rugby Challenge Cup window will see the Falcons play back to back games against the Irish side, who currently sit at the top of the competition’s pool one.
In a tight and hard-fought game that saw the Falcons come within two points of their opponents, a string of missed opportunities and a late score from the home side sent the visitors away empty-handed.
The Falcons’ captain in Galway commented: “It was an enjoyable game with both teams going hard and getting stuck in. But the opportunities we didn’t take killed us in the end.
“It came down to those small margins and opportunities we missed, but once they got their tails up and we were chasing a bit it became more difficult. Then they got their try at the end which was very disappointing.”
“At once stage the game could’ve gone either way which makes it all the more frustrating. But it’s easy to say what we should’ve done, which has been a bit of a theme so far this season.”
But as the two sides prepare to face one another again next weekend, the Flanker was keen to remain positive.
“Friday night’s game was frustrating but we’re already looking forward to playing them next week, working on those things that we missed and hopefully redeeming ourselves with a good win.
“We’ll work on the things we didn’t do so well, then front up and hopefully get a win at home next week.”
And after running out in front of a vocal and passionate crowd on Friday night, Mayhew says his team are determined to make the most of their own home advantage.
“We love playing at home in front of our fans and on our pitch and it’s going to be important for the boys to get them back there and take them on at home. We have to make sure we take our opportunities and do well, and we’re looking forward to doing that.”
