Morris looks to make Kingston Park return

After a gruelling pre-season, second row Ben Morris is hoping to put his training into practice next weekend when he returns to Kingston Park as part of the visiting opposition with loan club Rotherham Titans.

One of four Falcons Senior Academy players currently on loan to the Championship side, Morris admits it will be a strange experience if he is chosen to play in next weekend’s pre-season fixture.

“I’m hoping to feature, which will be a bit weird, but it would be nice to play on the new pitch too.”

Morris, 22, joined Rotherham on loan towards the end of last season, stepping up from National League One where he had previously been dual registered with North East side Blaydon.

The Newcastle University graduate confessed that pre-season training with the Championship side hasn’t been easy. “It’s been hard work. At Rotherham we’re not the biggest team so it’s a case of being the fittest team. We’ve been doing lots of running, which has taken it out of us, but hopefully that will pay dividends throughout the season.”

Home fans and coaches have already had one opportunity to see the results of that training after Morris made a strong showing for the Falcons in both rounds of the Premiership Rugby 7s earlier this month.

Speaking of his own performance in the competition, Pontefract-born Morris said: “Hopefully it went OK for me. Being on TV is a good opportunity to be seen and I scored a try in each round and got a few tackles in.

“We were unlucky on the night of the finals but being involved and getting to the finals again was a good experience.”

But after turning out for the Falcons on two consecutive weekends, Morris was soon back to training with his dual registration club for the Titans first game of the season against Northampton Saints.

And the extra training clearly paid off, with the South Yorkshire side recording a valiant 33-28 loss to last season’s Aviva Premiership Champions.

Having featured in that match, Morris and his fellow Falcons – Sean Robinson, Andy Davies and Chris Harris – are all in with a strong chance of taking to the field at Kingston Park against their Falcons team mates next weekend.

Next Saturday’s match, which kicks off at 3pm, is included in the Newcastle Falcons 2014-15 Season Ticket package.
