New deal for Marcus Tiffen
Marcus Tiffen has extended his stay with Newcastle Falcons, signing a two-year deal with the option of a third season.
The 21-year-old senior academy back-rower has scored two tries in his nine first team appearances, and is now with the squad full-time after completing his maths degree at Newcastle University.
Head of academy James Ponton said: “We’re really pleased to have signed up another local lad who has come through our academy, pushing him towards our senior squad.
“He’s with us full time now, but it’s been a great effort for him finishing his maths degree while playing professional rugby.
“That’s a huge achievement, and it’s testament to his work ethic and his organisational ability that he’s been able to juggle a really difficult degree subject with the demands of being in our environment. He’s impressed enough during that time to get another two-year contract, and that says a lot about him.”
Asked what he sees as the attributes of the Carlisle native, Ponton said: “Tiff brings a great attitude and a super skill set.
“He works hard, breaks a lot of tackles and he’s one of those guys who wins the ball back without doing all the flashy stuff. He causes a lot of disruption for opponents and I’m looking forward to seeing him really push on now.
“He can play six or seven, and I’d expect us to push him more towards seven with the skill set and athletic ability he has. He can be really effective there, and it’s great that he will be with us for the next couple of seasons.”
Delighted to have secured his future with the club, Tiffen said: “I’m really excited about the next few years here with the Falcons.
“I’ve been involved with Newcastle since the junior academy at age 14 or 15, and the club means a lot to me.
“I’ve got loads of close friends here, I’m looking forward to what’s ahead and it feels like a fresh start for the club with Steve Diamond coming in.
“I injured my ankle in November and had surgery so it hasn’t been the year I would have wanted, but I’m back for this week and available for selection.
“The long-term goal is to try and make a name for myself and be part of that senior 23 week in, week out, but I know we’ve got great competition here and those things have to be earned.”
