Newcastle Red Bulls have announced a trio of back-line signings following a successful summer trial, with Harrison Obatoyinbo, Joel Grayson and Sam Waugh all joining on one-year deals.

All three players have been with the club during pre-season, with director of rugby Steve Diamond taking the opportunity to add to his back-three options.

Harrison Obatoyinbo is a wing or full-back who came through Saracens’ academy, and is the brother of Newcastle full-back Elliott Obatoyinbo. From Saracens, the 24-year-old joined Ealing Trailfinders before moving to French clubs Toulon and Stade Montois. 

Full-back Sam Waugh arrives from Loughborough University, with the 20-year-old sports management student playing full-back and standing at 6 foot 6.

Joel Grayson completes the trio of trialists signing up for the season, with the wing/full-back being the twin brother of Newcastle team-mate Ethan Grayson.

The 23-year-old is a product of Northampton Saints’ academy who has recently graduated from the University of the West of England. A former pupil of Northampton School for Boys, he has also played club rugby for Old Northamptonians.

Diamond said: “We’ve had a good look at all three lads during pre-season, and they deserve this opportunity.

“They’ve worked incredibly hard, they’ve all got ability and they will add to our options across the back three.

“It’s a big chance for all of them to push on with their professional rugby careers, and I’m looking forward to seeing their continued development over the coming weeks and months.”
