The Cauldron that is Kingsholm is one of rugby’s iconic venues and one renowned for its passionate support for the home side.

In the face of a bellowing 12,000 strong crowd, Sean Robinson had an extended run out for the Falcons after the early withdrawal of Ally Hogg and acquitted himself well in his third Aviva Premiership appearance of the season.

“It’s always nice to get plenty of game time. It’s a shame that Hoggy picked up that niggle but I was delighted to have such a big involvement in the game,” said Robinson.

“I was obviously gutted with the way the game turned out; I thought we got ourselves into a really good position and just kind of fell away in that last ten minutes.”

“I think they got some good momentum going which really helped them, and the Shed really got behind them which probably gave them an extra kick because sometimes that extra noise just gets you over the line. We gave our all and we could’ve come away with the win really. It’s a bit disappointing but we’ll learn from those mistakes.”

With captain Will Welch saying the same earlier this week, Robinson believes the Falcons know exactly what needs to be done to convert those exciting performances into positive results.

“Perhaps we need to develop a bit more of a winning mentality. There’s been a few occasions this year that we’ve just not quite managed to get over the line because of small mistakes but correcting that is a lot about learning from those games and developing that mentality.”

Now sitting nine points behind London Irish, the Falcons are all but confirmed in eleventh place in the Aviva Premiership, but the 24 year old says his teammates thoughts are still very much in the game.

“After Saturday’s result I think the guys will be even more determined for the rest of the season. What we showed against Gloucester is that we still care and want to win these games and that there’s still that desire and passion there.

“Even though perhaps we can’t really improve our league position now we still want to finish the season strongly. Going forward into the Sale and the Harlequins game, they’re both games we see as potential wins. So as we did for 70 minutes on Saturday we’ve just got to get ourselves in a good position and then learn from the mistakes and get over the line.”

For Robinson though there’s the potential of another milestone game still to come before the Falcons head back into Aviva Premiership action as his dual registration club Rotherham prepare for the first leg of their Championship play-off semi final this weekend.

“I’ve spoken to Mark (Laycock) and Dean, who’ve said they’re happy for me to go to Rotherham this weekend. It’s always a massive test to go up against those clubs and those are the games that get you excited to really test yourself against those players is always exciting so I’m hoping to be involved this weekend.”

Having confirmed their place at fourth in the RFU Championship after a string of impressive performances, Rotherham will this weekend play the first of two games against pole position Bristol in the hopes of causing an upset and reaching the play off final.

“Obviously it’s a massive test and you expect the Bristol players to be really stepping up their game now because this is the crunch period of the season for them. But we’ve had two close results against Bristol this season so that will give us a lot of confidence, and we’ll go in there backing ourselves and being confident as we always do.

“I still think with the players that we’ve got down there we’ve got every chance of causing an upset if we play to the top of our game. There’s no real room for error if you play against a quality side like Bristol. I do think we’ll have to be at our best but for sure if we go out there and play good rugby then I don’t see anything stopping us from causing an upset.”

Starting his first season of full-time rugby as one of four dual registered Falcons at Rotherham alongside Chris Harris, Andy Davies and Ben Morris, the Durham University graduate has a strong affinity for both teams.

“The guys at Rotherham are always very welcoming. I think having spent a full pre-season down there certainly helped; I got to know all of the guys down there and I feel equally comfortable at both clubs.

“Down there play offs is the goal we set out at the start of the season, to finish in that top four. There’s been a real big push in those last six weeks; if you look at those last six weeks we’ve won five of them, it was just that narrow defeat to Bristol so we’ve gained some good momentum. So everyone involved in the club is delighted to have achieved that, the players especially.”

After returning to Kingston Park initially for the opening rounds of the European competition, in which the Falcons committed to playing a largely young, English side, Robinson has made numerous trips to and from South Yorkshire this season.

“Obviously moving between the two clubs does impact you slightly in terms of the preparation but you’ve got to be prepared to just get on with it really and just to put a bit more work in behind the scenes to get to know your stuff and put yourself in the best possible position when you go out there to play.

“I’m just enjoying playing. I’m in a lucky position; the coaches up here have said they’re pleased with me and are encouraging me to keep improving and to trust my ability and I’m grateful to Rotherham too for this season.”

Rotherham are away to Bristol this weekend in the first leg of the Championship play-off semi final (ko 1.30pm) in a game being shown live on Sky Sports 3.
