Support Lauren Wood’s 7in7 challenge
Yorkshire-based teenager, Lauren Wood, will set out to complete an ultra-marathon challenge helping raise vital funds for MND charities
The 18-year-old A-Level student from York is embarking on an incredible journey to raise funds and awareness for two charities, the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association and My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.
Wood is challenging herself to do a 7in7 endurance marathon (18th – 24th February) and will push her physical and mental limits as she completes seven consecutive days of gruelling endurance activities, totalling 275 miles.
The challenge comprises four days of running, covering 107 miles, and three days of cycling, totalling 168 miles. This endeavour holds a deeper meaning for the MND and rugby communities, with the numbers 5 and 7 representing iconic players Rob Burrow who is bravely battling MND and Doddie Weir who succumbed to the disease in 2022.
Lauren felt compelled to act upon learning about Doddie Weir’s diagnosis. Inspired by Kevin Sinfield’s fundraising efforts when she witnessed him running past her school, Lauren saw an opportunity to contribute to the fight against MND.
Lauren’s dedication to the cause is evident as she prepares to tackle the challenge. With the support of her family, friends, Coach Ben, and the Movement Blueprint, Lauren is determined to cross the finish line at Edinburgh Accies and raise crucial funds for MND research and support.
Lauren’s challenge will cover the following:
Day One – Headingley to York – 27.3 miles – run
Day Two – York to Darlington – 62.5 miles – cycle
Day Three – Darlington to Durham – 26.5 miles – run
Day Four – Durham to Otterburn – 55.7 miles – cycle
Day Five – Otterburn to Jedburgh- 26.4 miles – run
Day Six – Jedburgh to Middleton – 50.2 miles – cycle
Day Seven – Middleton to Murrayfield – 26.4 miles – run
The route Lauren takes will see her visit some important rugby venues for both Union and League to fully embrace the importance of the game for both Rob and Doddie. She will be stopping at Headingley Stadium, Darlington Mowden RUFC, Newcastle Falcons, Jedburgh RFC, St Boswells RFC, Melrose RFC, Gala RFC and Edinburgh Accies RFC.
Discussing the challenge, Lauren said: “I am passionate about sport, and watching rugby with my family has been a significant part of my life. After seeing Kevin’s efforts and determination when completing his own ‘7 in 7 in 7 Challenge’, I was inspired to do something myself to help the cause. This challenge has tested my limits, but I am determined to finish and raise awareness and funds for MND.
“All funds raised for the challenge will be split evenly between the MND Association and My Name’5 Doddie Foundation. These organisations provide vital support to individuals and families affected by MND while funding research efforts to find a cure for this devastating disease.”
Lauren’s challenge has grabbed the attention of several leading figures in the sporting world with Kevin Sinfield, Gareth Southgate, Jonny Bairstow and Scott Hastings all sharing videos of support with her to help encourage and raise awareness.
Lauren has also secured sponsorship and support from the following people and businesses; John Readman and Modo25, Business Waste, Enterprise Car Hire York, and Sporting Connexions – this support will ensure that more funds go towards the charities.
Motor Neurone Disease is a life-limiting condition that affects motor neurons, leading to muscle weakness, stiffness, and wasting. It impacts various aspects of daily life, including mobility, speech, and breathing, with symptoms progressing at varying speeds. While there is currently no cure for MND, ongoing research and support services aim to improve the quality of life for those affected.
