The Big One: Gateshead set to bring biggest group
Gateshead RFC will be the biggest group supporting Newcastle Falcons at next weekend’s Big One at St James’ Park, with over 450 members of the club attending the game against Sale Sharks.
Entering two teams into the Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup festival at Kingston Park ahead of the match, the U11s and U12s sections from the Low Fell club will be joined by the club-mates from Under 7s up to Under 16s.
These groups include members of the club’s growing girls sections with their U13s and U15s teams all part of what will be a massive day out for the club and will see them as one of the most visible groups within St James’ Park.
Gateshead’s weight of numbers comes in no small part by the efforts of their club connections ambassador Mark Goddard, who superbly coordinated the different sections of the club into a galvanised effort.
Having attended the 2018 edition of The Big One as well, it is becoming an established part of the club’s calendar.
Goddard said: “Following on from the successful Big One event in 2018 Gateshead RFC devised a plan to attend the 2019 event. Each of the age grade teams were asked to canvas parents and the response was enormous.
“There are players attending the Land Rover Cup in the morning then travelling across to Newcastle for the game and making a full family day of rugby. We also have families attending this with friends to promote the sport at a unique opportunity to see the Falcons play at St James Park.”
“We’re looking forward to a great day and everyone is hoping for a good result.”
