Toulon away: The statistical preview

* The only previous season in which RC Toulon and Newcastle Falcons have met in the EPCR Challenge Cup was in 2011/12 when they clashed in the pool stage, with each team recording a home victory. Newcastle were 6-3 winners in December 11 on a windswept night at Kingston Park Stadium against a Toulon squad including ex-Falcons Carl Hayman and Jonny Wilkinson. But Toulon made amends a week later in the return leg, defeating the Falcons 36-10 at Stade Felix Mayol.

* Newcastle’s last visit to Stade Felix Mayol came in October 2018, when they recorded a memorable 26-25 victory in the Heineken Champions Cup pool stage.

* RC Toulon have won their last 15 home games in the EPCR Challenge Cup, a run that includes five games against Premiership clubs. Only five teams have enjoyed longer winning runs at home in the competition (Agen, Clermont, Bath, Newcastle and Sale).

* Newcastle Falcons have won their last five away games in the pool stage of the EPCR Challenge Cup, after losing each of the previous six. Three of those five wins came in France against Top 14 opposition – notably last Friday in Biarritz.

* RC Toulon and Newcastle Falcons were tied for most turnovers won in Round 3 of this season’s EPCR Challenge Cup (8). In addition, Newcastle also completed the most dominant tackles of any team in the round (12).

* Toulon scrum-half Baptiste Serin has provided more try assists for his team than any other player in this season’s EPCR Challenge Cup (3).
