
Watson shines as GB Lions win Exeter 7s plate final
The Newcastle winger scored a fine individual try and followed it up with a poacher’s score in the corner as his side defeated Germany 31-19 in the final.
The Lions had earlier beaten Belgium, Italy and Germany to top their group, losing 7-5 to Russia in the cup quarter-final before beating Georgia 22-7 in the plate semis.
Watson’s Lions were one of two Great Britain teams in the competition, with GB Royals beating France to win the cup final.
Team GB’s training squad will be whittled down to 12 on July 19 when the final group is announced for rugby 7s’ Olympic debut in Rio de Janeiro next month.
Sevens action will also be coming to Kingston Park Stadium on Saturday July 30 when Newcastle Falcons host their regional qualifier in the Singha Premiership 7s, taking on Leicester Tigers, Sale Sharks and Worcester Warriors.
