Welch named Falcons’ player of the season

Skipper Will Welch was named Newcastle Falcons player of the season on Wednesday evening, as the 2015/16 season drew to a close with the club’s end of season awards evening.

Welch, who played in 21 out of 22 Aviva Premiership rounds of the season, scooped his award after coming out on top of a vote by supporters and members of the Falcons’ coaching staff, rewarding a season that saw the 26 year old make 14 full 80 minute appearances.

Hosted in Kingston Park Stadium’s West Stand, the evening saw a further six awards presented.

In a season where he made his first team and Aviva Premiership debut’s, Craig Willis was named academy player of the season, while Rob Vickets work with the Falcons Community Foundation saw the loose head prop awarded the trophy for his efforts in support of their work.

Simon Hammersley’s spectacular try against Brive in the European Rugby Challenge Cup was named best try of the season, while top try scorer Nili Latu earned the vote of his peers to take the Players player of the season award.

After regularly featuring at the top of the OPTA stats for the league, lock Sean Robinson crowned his season by lifting the Ken Lockerbie Trophy, awarded to the player with the highest average performance points in the Journal and Chronicle player rankings, while Angela Alderson received the Clubperson of the Year trophy.
