Wilson turns focus towards visit of Harlequins
The flanker led out the side in the injury-enforced absence of club skipper Will Welch, tries from Joel Hodgson, Will Witty and Vereniki Goneva delivering a second away league win of the season as Newcastle now prepare for the visit of Quins in a 3pm kick-off.
Wilson said: “We have got to be massively excited going into the Harlequins game. We had a big home crowd in against Exeter and it would be great to see those guys coming back next Sunday.
“After a big away win we want to carry that form back to our home patch, and we’ve got to come into training with the same intensity and focus we have shown all this week. We have to keep our standards high in everything we do, and if we do that we can beat anyone.”
Looking back on Friday’s dramatic triumph at Franklin’s Gardens, the Cumbrian workhorse said: “Ironically, it was quite scrappy, and we made it harder work than it should have been.
“Joel’s try got us off to the ideal start, and we were in control of the game in that spell. It’s a great scalp, we had to work hard for it and it’s now on to Harlequins at Kingston Park next Sunday.
“We were at Franklin’s Gardens playing against a good side, so they were always going to have a purple patch at some point. But we rode it, we got through the worst and when we stuck to the things we worked on in training we can beat anyone.
“We have just got to have the discipline to do what we talk about, stick to what we practice, and the effort the boys put in was fantastic. To be able to frustrate a team like that in the manner that we did – that’s what led us to the victory.
“Sloppy errors kept them in the game, but once we got ourselves back on task we showed what a quality side we can be.”
Praising match-winner Goneva, he added: “I thought Niki was world class tonight.
“As well as the winning try it was just the little things he did throughout the whole game, it’s great to have him in our side and nice that we can release him in parts of the field where he can cause problems for the opposition. Everything starts with doing the job up front, though, and making a platform for guys like Niki to shine. We can’t forget that.”
