YORK TARGETS ‘BIGGER & BETTER THINGS’ WITH FALCONS

Falcons boss Dean Richards made York his 11th player to extend his stay on Tyneside adding to his nine acquisitions already drafted in for the forthcoming campaign.

And York, 24, who played under Richards at Harlequins, has already turned his attention to the gruelling pre-season schedule, itching to solidify a regular starting berth.

“It was such a relief to have got things sorted at Newcastle and I firmly believe this club can go on to bigger and better things under Dean and John Wells,” said York.

“It’s fantastic that the club has also attracted a string of top quality players to the North East with no fewer than nine signings announced so far which is great for rugby in the area.

“We have proven internationals joining the club and I can’t wait to meet them,” he added.

One player currently away on international duty is Kieran Brookes, who has travelled to New Zealand on tour with Stuart Lancaster’s England squad. York insists Brookes’ call-up is thoroughly deserved, saying: “He had bad luck with his suspension towards the end of the season, but he didn’t let that affect him mentally and he finished the season well. He is a real talent and will certainly want to get stuck in on tour and show what he can do.”

A break in Las Vegas following the season finale was just what the doctor ordered for York, who had a minimal summer break last time around due to the Championship play-off marathon.

And according to the Epsom-born powerhouse, he has come back to the country refreshed for the new term.

“I think I needed that time away to be honest and I feel in good shape both mentally and physically,” he said.

He added: “You do need some down time at the end of what is a very demanding season, and the time away has done me and the other boys a lot of good.”
