Falcons bid a fond farewell to Matt Thompson
The 31 year old has enjoyed a 14 year career at Kingston Park, making over 200 appearances for the North East Club and leave’s the Falcons with the full backing of the club’s coaching staff and management.
Currently in the middle of a testimonial year, the club will continue to support the events taking place as part of this celebration of his achievements as a player, with the next being a revealing talk in with former Newcastle Falcons chairman Dave Thompson.
A former pupil of Royal Grammar School in Newcastle, Thompson joined the club’s academy structure in 1999 before making his Premiership Rugby debut in 2000 when he lined up against Bristol Rugby.
During his career he has represented England at U18, U21 and Saxons levels as well as featuring in the Falcons squads for the Powergen Cup Final in 2004 and in the club’s Heineken Cup Quarter Final against Stade Francais in April 2005.
Director of Rugby Dean Richards said: “It’s a shame that Thommo won’t be a part of our squad going further but he feels ready to embrace a new challenge in his rugby.”
“He has put in some impressive shifts during my tenure here as Director of Rugby for which I am truly thankful for and I wish him all the best for the future.
Matt Thompson said: “I’d like to thank everyone that has been involved and has helped me during my 14 years at Newcastle Falcons. My time at the club has given my family and I many great memories.”
“I’d especially like to thank the fans who have always been an enthusiastic and supportive group and I hope to see many of them at the testimonial events this year, which the club will continue to support.”
